46, 266 fines originally handed out by HMRC have been withdrawn in the last 12 months. These fines were incorrectly given to individuals who either owed no tax or had missed deadlines due to issues outside their control. This was a record number of penalties handed out in the last year and many people could now be due refunds.

A major overhaul to the UK Tax and Customs system has been unveiled by HMRC recently (July 21st 2025), which could impact approximately 35 million people on PAYE. Employees who pay tax through Pay As You Earn will be given access to a new digital service designed to make their tax affairs much easier and simpler to understand. It will be accessible through a personal tax account via the HMRC app.
